The Navajo Area Indian Health Service (IHS) maintains 5 hospitals in "service units": Chinle Comprehensive Health Care Facility, Crownpoint Health Care Facility, Gallup Indian Medical Center, and Northern Navajo Medical Center (Shiprock, NM), totalling 222 hospital beds; and the Kayenta Health Center in Kayenta, AZ, an Alternative Rural Hospital with 10 short stay nursing beds and ambulatory surgery.

Through the Indian Health Service Tribal Self-Governance Program, Tribal health corporations authorized by the Navajo Nation contract or compact with IHS to operate hospitals and health care centers at Fort Defiance Indian Hospital/Tsehootsooi Medical Center, Winslow Indian Health Care Center, Inc., Tuba City Regional Health Care Corporation, Sage Memorial Hospital, and Utah Navajo Health System, Inc. These tribal health corporations are sometimes called "PL 93-638" tribal self-determination or self-governance heath corporations.

BEHAVIOR & MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES. The Navajo Nation Division of Behavioral Health Services (NNDBMHS) operates non-medical services, Please visit "Public Health - TRIBAL" link for more information on all tribal wellness programs. There are 11 outpatient services offering prevention and early intervention service. There is 1 residential treatment facility which does not offer medically managed intensive inpatient treatment.
- In AZ: 9 outpatient services in Chinle, Dilkon, Fort Defiance, Kaibeto, Kayenta, New Lands, Red Mesa and Tuba City.
